Getting to the Embarkation Point

Unless otherwise stated, the hikes in this book can be reached in normal passenger vehicles. It is rarely pavement all the way, however, and backcountry driving is harder on vehicles than highway or city driving. Some of these improved roads are good for 55 miles an hour. Some of the unimproved roads will require a first-gear crawl.
Mileages mostly are taken from USGS 7.5' quad maps. References from mileposts are by odometer. (Warning: Odometers vary) This book favors the use of direction and distance, rather than road signs. Signed intersections in the Oregon Desert are rare. Where signs were erected, more often than not, they have been knocked down, torn down, worn down, or gunned down.
